JUVÉDERM® Guidelines

Pre and Post-Treatment Guidelines

JUVÉDERM® Pre-Treatment Guidelines

The recommended guidelines from Dunkirk dentist Dr. Cynthia Sclater are to help you achieve the best results from your dermal filler and other injectable treatments. Dermal filler injections (Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm Voluma, Volbella) carry the risk of bruising, particularily if you are taking certain supplements or medications. To reduce this risk, please note the items on this list and discontinue at least 3 days before your appointment for injections. A patient should be in good overall health. If you have a special event or vacation coming up, schedule your treatment at least two weeks in advance.

Medications to Discontinue 3 Days Before Treatment

**if you have been prescribed Aspirin or any prescription Blood Thinner, do not discontinue unless permitted by your prescribing physician. Cold Sores: If you have a history of cold sores, ask us about pre-care instructions. It is not the Juvederm that causes the possible outbreak, it is the injection.  Also, we have laser technology that can speed healing if you do get a cold sore…we would provide this at no charge. If you have an active cold sore, blemish or rash, etc, prior to your appointment, you must reschedule.

JUVÉDERM® Post-Treatment Guidelines

Avoid Excessive Sun and Heat: Until any initial swelling and redness has resolved. This includes aggressive exercise. Three days is recommended

Skin Care: Avoid facials, waxing or any other treatment that involves the face for a week following your treatment.

Avoid squeezing or massaging the treated areas the rest of the day after treatment, as this may subtly change the shape we are trying to achieve. Also, avoid using make-up or make-up brushes that may contain bacteria.

Sunscreen: Proper and frequent application of sunscreen is always important. The sunscreen should offer broadband protection (UVA and UVB) and have a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more. You should apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside, and again, immediately before. After that, reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours. If direct sun exposure is necessary, wear a hat and clothing that covers the treated area. Use this regimen during the healing period and always.

Exaggerated and repeated movements should be minimized during the first 3 days after a treatment to minimize product migration/displacement. Avoid kissing, puckering and sucking movements for the rest of the day as these motor movements can undesirably displace the implanted dermal filler material. Irritation, sores and post-operative complications including scarring are possible if you manipulate the dermal filler implants.

In Closing: You should not have any dental work or exercise strenuously for 3 days after your treatment, and should not fly for 48 hours afterward.  You also should not drink alcohol, or take aspirin or NSAIDs for three days afterward. It is helpful to apply cold compresses to minimize the possibility of bruising.

Avoid sleeping on your face for the first three days following your procedure. Sleep elevated and use several pillows for elevation if possible.

JUVÉDERM® Possible Side Effects

The intensity and duration of your side effects depends on the type of treatment received and
your individual healing characteristics, but usually can last up to a week after treatment.

Swelling: You will notice most of the swelling the first morning after treatment, particularly
under the eyes. Swelling usually lasts two to three days. To minimize swelling: Apply cold compresses to the treatment area for 10 minutes every hour. Take Arnica Montana and/or Bromelain supplements, or topical Arnica, which can be found at your local pharmacy or herbal supplement store.

Lips: The initial swelling after treatment to the lips may last longer. Some patients experience swelling for up to a week and the lips can look somewhat ‘uneven’ during this time. After the swelling has subsided, you will be able to see your true results. It takes time for hyaluronic gels to balance with your skin’s own water content.

Tenderness/Pain: You may take Tylenol if necessary.
